I learned about Norval Morrisseau by chance this morning while flipping through channels in bed. I paused at a story on Brian Jungen (another First Nations artist who is also quite awesome) that sequed into a piece about the retrospective of Morrisseau’s work which is currently on display at the National Gallery of Canada. Interestingly, this will be the first solo show devoted to a Native Canadian artist to appear at the National Gallery. Seems a bit ridiculous in a country that plasters the Inukshuk all over everything presumably to prove how much pride we have in our nation’s heritage.
