Poem for a Rainy Monday

I can’t remember when I first read this poem.  I think it was with Mr. Green in my OAC Writer’s Craft class — or was it earlier … with Mr. Hall, or even Ms Hart?  It’s a shame I don’t know, because it’s been one of my favourite things ever since.  Years later, when I was struggling in university, I saw it scrawled on the wall in the underground tunnel at York.  It seemed like a missive just for me.

This is Just to Say
William Carlos Williams

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold
