Jeffrey Eugenides

I learned about Jeffrey Eugenides around the time that Sophia Coppolla’s film adaptation of his book, The Virgin Suicides, hit the rental market. That movie was so weird that, looking for clarification, I immediately read the book. Equally weird! And that is how it came to hang on every word Jeffrey Eugenides commits to paper.

Sadly, the man does not have a huge back catalogue. It’s been a long ten years since his last novel, and when I heard he was going to be at the Reference Library to promote his new book, The Marriage Plot, it was a hell or high water moment.

I didn’t really know what to expect from Jeffrey Eugenides.  His writing is super smart so I suspected he might not be the greatest in a social setting.  Wrong! Jeffrey Eugenides was completely charming and captivating.  And he read beautifully.

If you ever have the chance to hear him read in person, you should. Or you could watch this video, from his appearance here last Monday:
